The Labour and Employment Agency of BiH held a press conference today to present the results of its activities in 2013 and announce the upcoming activities in 2014.  The press was addressed by Mr. Adnan Delic, the LEA Director and Mr. Željko Rajić, the LEA Deputy Director.

This year has started with a downward trend in unemployment level which persisted until June 2013 when the increase of unemployment was registered which persisted throughout July and August which was expected due to new inflows of school-leavers to unemployment registers.

The look at the period January-October 2013 reveals the following:

  • an increase in the number of registered unemployed (in comparison to January 2013 the number has increased by 1,933 persons or 0.3%)
  • an increased inflow to unemployment registers (the total increase for the observed period is 5.3% in comparison to the same period of 2012),
  • an increase outflow from unemployment registers into jobs (in comparison to the same period of 2012 this number is up by 8,281 persons or 12.0%),
  • an increase of job announcements,
  • an increase in the number of persons whose employment terminated,
  • an increase in the number of unemployment benefit recipients (in comparison with the average for the same period in 2012 this number is up by 2,315 persons or 20.1%).

Although, according to some indicators, Bosnia and Herzegovina has registered a slight economic growth in the first six months of 2013, this was not enough to have a significant influence on improvement in the labour market situation.  On this ground, it seems that the labour market recovery in Bosnia and Herzegovina is going very hard.   The current picture of the labour market in BiH in the period January-October 2013 is characterized by a sluggish growth in the number of unemployed and a decrease in the number of persons in employment.

In the period January-December 2013, the Labour and Employment Agency of BiH has placed more than 1500 persons into jobs in other countries, mostly in Slovenia and Germany in accordance with the arrangement on mediation in employment of medical workers with secondary school education.

In the referred period, the LEA BiH has processed more than 4600 claims related to the issue of certificates for unemployment benefits.

Special focus in implementation of activities in 2014 will be given to initiation of agreements on seasonal employment with Croatia, Montenegro and the Netherlands and finalisation of procedure concerning the conclusion of social security agreements with Canada and Australia.
